Farm Transition & Succession Planning: A Listening & Learning Series

  • Anita Gorman Conservation Discovery Center 4750 Troost Avenue Kansas City, MO, 64110 United States (map)

Sooner or later, there will come a time for all farms and ranches when the operator(s) want or need to retire or transition out of the business. Before that time comes, it’s essential to think about the future of that land, whether it’s being inherited by family, or sold or leased to others.

At the same time, many new farmers and ranchers are looking for land to buy or rent, and partnering with an established farm or ranch operator as part of a business transition plan can benefit both parties.

However, creating a succession plan is a big endeavor that requires significant time and energy in planning, strategizing, and collaborating with business partners, family members, professionals (such as attorneys, tax professionals, and meditators), and the aspiring farmer(s).

Whether you’re looking to sell or rent as you retire, or are seeking new opportunities to buy or lease a farm or ranch, this event series will allow you to listen and learn about this critical topic, share your plans and questions, and connect with other farmers and ranchers who are interested in selling, leasing, buying or renting.

This is the first of these quarterly events hosted in partnership by Cultivate KC and KC F.A.R.M.E.R.S. Coalition (a community project of KC Farm School and Kansas City Black Urban Growers). It’s supported with funding and resources by the USDA, American Farmland Trust, and Farm Commons. It aims to provide valuable insights and resources for those navigating farm transitions and succession planning.
